Togo’s Economy
The economy of Togo is mainly based on agriculture and 78% of the people are engaged in agriculture. Agriculture accounts for approximately 50% of gross national product and 70% of exports. All over the country are grown crops by small farmer families. The main export plants of the country are coffee, palm products, palm oil extract, cocoa and cotton. Other important trade plants are great coconuts and peanuts. Food plants are grown in Togo as sweet potatoes, cassava, potatoes and rice.
The manufacturing industry forms a small part of the Togo economy. Textile and footwear industry has developed in the country. It buys machines, foodstuffs, building materials, chemicals and paper products.
Togo does most of the foreign trade with France. Other major trading countries are United Germany, the Netherlands and Belgium.
