The Economy of Vanuatu
Vanuatu is comprised of 83 islands, 80 percent of which are settled, and the difficulties encountered in transportation constitute one of the main problems facing the region.
The economy of Vanuatu is largely based on agriculture, fishing, tourism and financial services. The majority of the people earn their living from the agriculture sector. In recent years, the export of timber, cocoa, beef and fish has been increased. Foreign trade deficit, tourism revenues and foreign aid is trying to close.
The agricultural sector has a share of 25 percent in the GDP, 12 percent in the industrial sector, and 63 percent in the services sector (including tourism). Manufacturing industry mainly consists of canned meat, fruit juice bottling and furniture manufacturing.
