Nauru's Economy
Nauru faces important economic challenges such as other island countries in the region. In Nauru, the arable land is insufficient and almost all supplies, including water, are imported. Agricultural activities are limited to small-scale tropical fruit and vegetable production. Energy demand is also met by imported oil.
Due to limited resources, employment is insufficient. The unemployment rate is at 90 percent.
Nauru is the backbone of the economy and the only export substance has been phosphate since 1945. About 80 percent of the soils are phosphate deposits. Approximately 10 percent of the 2014-2015 budget is derived from phosphate.
Another source of income for Nauru is fishing licenses granted to China, Japan, South Korea, Taiwan and the United States.
With the reopening of the Australian refugee center in Nauru in 2012, a certain contribution was made to the economy.
